Spurs Are Packing A Revenge Punch!!

Spurs Are Packing A Revenge Punch!!

Francis S Estepan.  Published April 13th, 2018

Under 24 hours till the beginning of the first game of this year’s NBA Playoffs.  The San Antonio Spurs will travel to Oakland for the first game against the Golden State Warriors.  Last year, these teams met in the Western Conference Finals where the Warriors came out on top.  Neither team was able to reach the 60 game win mark, also their playoff seeding changed a bit as well.  Both teams are dealing with injuries to major players, but both teams have found a way into the playoffs and the matchup couldn’t be any better.

Spurs want revenge!! They may not say it or show it, but revenge is fueling Popovich’s team right now.  The Spurs are a very composed team that are not going to lose their “cool.”  The biggest distraction has been the Kawhi Leonard situation, being only 3 games shy of another 50 win season sounds like a good solution.  Don’t pay too much attention to their 7th seed standing record, Popovich has the time to form up schemes to stress out the Warriors.

The Warriors go to play is the Steph- KD pick and roll.  Without Steph, KD and Klay has to carry the offensive load with Draymond Green as the 3rd option.  The defense will hold their own vs any team, but relying on streaky shooters such as Swaggy P and Cook may be a problem.  Kerr is a great coach and he will figure out a way to work the bench rotation but all errors have to be limited.  Any sign of frustration or weakness will exploited.

The Warriors are the favorite to win the series.  They should be extremely confident in their performance and their 4 All Star players.  The Houston Rockets are the team that is set to dethrone them.  For the Spurs, revenge is best served cold and what would be colder than the Spurs sending the champions on an early trip out of the playoffs.

Key matchups:

  • KD vs Aldridge: At some point in time we will see this 2 going at each other. Aldridge is bigger and heavier than KD which can create some bully ball opportunity down low. On the other side KD length and unlimited range could require Aldridge to come out to the 3 point line.
  • Klay Thompson vs Dejounte Murray: Murray is nowhere near the level of player that Klay Thompson is (yet), but the potential is there. If Klay can prevent his numbers going down in the playoffs, the Warriors will be fine. But if they do (like last year), Murray could become a breakout story.
  • Draymond Green Vs Rudy Gay: In 11 years Rudy has only being to the playoffs once. He is coming off a season ending injury, averaging career low in minutes and scoring. Opportunity could be knocking on his door and there is no better way to answer it by outperforming one of the NBAs elite defenders.
  • Role Players: JaVale Vs Pau!! Young Vs Ginobili!! Livingston Vs Parker!! Iguodala Vs Bertans!! Quinn Cook Vs Bryn Forbes!! One of this matchups could be the one that shifts the scale. Look for Popovich to exploit the bench matchups that will force KD and Thompson to become overwhelm.

Who Wins?

Did LeBron James throw the 2011 NBA Finals?

Did LeBron James throw the 2011 NBA Finals?

By Kevin Bertalotto.  March 29, 2018.

(Note: Not saying he did or didn’t but promoting the question/theory)

Now this does sound bizarre that a superstar competitor like LeBron would throw a whole Finals series considering he didn’t really gain anything, however after considering everything in play I guarantee you this article will make you think, “maybe.”

Everyone remembers the complete meltdown of “LeCHOKE” in the 2011 NBA Finals, however after reviewing it I believe LeBron low-key tanked it. There is multiple theories to why he would do such a thing.

Didn’t want Wade to be FMVP

052514 heat game story rg 8Sounds crazy but hold on, prior to Game 4 when LeBron had 8 points, Dwyane Wade was averaging 27 ppg, 8.7 rebs, 5 apg over 1 stl and 1 blk a game on 57% shooting. Surely that is FMVP worthy stats compared to Lebrons 20 ppg, 6.7 rebs, 6 asts, 2 stls on 51% shooting. Here’s why he would not allow this to happen. LeBron joining Wade’s Heat  was bad enough so for Wade winning FMVP would only make it worse just like Curry winning FMVP over KD last yr would make it worse for Durant. Now after Game 3 LBJ averaged about 15 8 and 8, 4.7 tovs and shot 44% so maybe after realizing he wouldn’t win FMVP he decided he wouldn’t let a teammate win it over him.

Prove his value

Now although I believe Derrick Rose deserved that MVP award, LeBron likely didn’t so after defeating Rose’s Bulls in 5 in the Eastern Conference Finals, LeBron figured “losing this series will prove how valuable I am” yeah it backlashed on him but doesn’t mean he didn’t think this.

Was asked to

Here’s the craziest theory. LeBron was asked by the then NBA commissioner David Stern to tank it to boost the ratings of next year’s Finals (OKC vs HEAT). Think about it what would make a better story, an experienced trio with a ring vs a young ringless trio or a ringless experienced trio vs a young ringless trio? LeBron being REALLY hungry for that ring and seeking to redeem himself only made the Kevin Durant/Bron matchup even better. So to get LeBron to throw 2011 Finals, they made a deal that the refs would favor Miami the following Finals which as a proud Heat fan I admit the officiating was horrible. OR instead of it being for ratings the next year Finals it was to repay DAL since the 2006 NBA Finals with the Mavericks vs Miami was officiated horribly against the Mavs and Mark Cuban part Mavs owner claimed the league is rigged.

Worth mentioning

Since the 2000 NBA Finals 14 times the champs got the most FTAs and what’s interesting is Miami in the first 3 rounds had more FTs 436-303 which means the Heat averaged 8 more FTAs than their opponent. DAL in their first 3 rounds had 378 FTs-364 which is only about 1 more free throw attempt a game. So keep that in mind Miami had a big difference in FTAs as opposed to DAL. Fast forward to the end and the Mavericks managed to get more free throws 155 to Heat’s 148. Not a big difference but still worth noting since Miami always got way more FTs until the Finals.

Sure all this is just speculation but definitely worth thinking over.

Utah Jazz: Cinderella Story in the Making??

Utah Jazz: Cinderella Story in the Making??

By Francis S Estepan. March 7, 2018

The Utah Jazz will be battling the Indiana Pacers to keep their playoffs hope alive.  The Jazz are 1 game out of the playoff picture with a record 34-30.  With 18 games left to the season and sitting out looking in no game is an easy one.  Both teams have a lot on the line coming up to this game.  After finally dropping one after going on an 11 game winning streak, the Jazz look to pick up and get on another winning streak, already winners of 3.

The Pacers are in a Cinderella story of their own currently holding the 4th spot in the East only half a game behind the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Indy is also on a 3 game winning streak.  Oladipo and Company have surprised the NBA and have proven that they can compete with anybody in their conference and outside off it.  The Pacers have a great game flow and they are very unselfish.  Oladipo can be considered their scoring leader but they have 6 other guys that average scoring in double digits.

If the Pacers lose this game they will drop to 37-28 and puts them in that 3 way mix with the Wizards and the 76ers.

Pacers’ Biggest Question: Last time they played Rudy Gobert nor Myles turner were there.  How would that change the game today?

Just like the Pacers the Jazz are also very well balance and there is not a one man show.  The Jazz also have 6 guys that average scoring double digits.  Lead by Rookie of the Year Nominee Donovan Mitchell.  One of the biggest stumbles that the Jazz have face this season have been injuries to their premier Frenchman Rudy Gobert, but with every game he is making strides.

A win here for the Jazz will put them on the toes of the Clippers and the Denver Nuggets.  Both Clippers and Nuggets play the Cavaliers this week who are looking to hold their number 3 seed ahead of the Pacers.

Jazz’ Biggest Question: The Jazz held their opponents to under 100 points in 4 of the last 5 games.  In those games they are 4-1.  Indy averages 106, can the Jazz stand their defense to an offense that shot over 50% against them last game?

Predictions/ Key Matchups

Utah Jazz win: Is a big revenge week for the Houston Rockets.  This is also a revenge game for the Jazz playing a team only twice a year makes the 2nd game that much exciting.  There is nothing more rewarding that beating a team in their home that once beat you at your home.  Neither Tuner nor Gobert played last game. That will the matchup to watch.

Rudy Gobert: 13 Ppg, 104 Rpg, 1.4 Apg, 2.3 Blpg (89 blocks)

Myles Turner: 13.2 Ppg, 6.9 Rpg, 1.5 Apg, 2 Blpg (94 blocks)

Sonics/Thunders: Greatest Point Guard?

Sonics/Thunders: Greatest Point Guard?

By Kevin Bertalotto, Published February 26th, 2018

At age 29 Westbrook can already make a great case as the Sonics/Thunder’s best point guard in franchise history.  First let’s compare each stats, both, basic and advanced stats, then conclude.

Scoring

Gary Payton at age 29 averaged 7 less Ppg at 15.9 to Russ’s 22.9, although Gary averaged 5 less shots attempts per game and shot better 48% to Westbrook’s 44%. Overall in his Sonics career Gary averaged 18.2 Ppg on .469% shooting. Payton’s career high was 24 on 45%. Russ who has 2 scoring titles had a career high of 31.6ppg on 42%. When he was 29 The Glove had an offensive rating of 112 to Russ’s 109. For offensive win shares at age 29, Russ leads 55.1 to Gary’s 43.

Rebounds and Assists

When it comes to rebounds average at 29, Russ leads that too 6.5 to Gary’s 3.5 but in his Sonics career The Glove grabbed 4.2rpg. His career high was 6.5 to Russ’s 10.7. Gary Payton through his first 10 seasons averaged 6.7 assists per game vs Russ’s 8.1. Career wise The Glove did averaged 7.4 assists per game. Their career highs in apg are 9 and 10.4 which Russ is averaging for the third time and not to mention Russ is likely to lead the league in asts. Mr. Payton averaged more steals with 2.3 and less tovs at 2.4 compared to Westbrook’s 1.7 stls per game and 4 tovs a game.

Advanced Stats

At age 29 Gary and Westbrook both had a defensive rating of 105. Same age, Russ has a higher Value over Replacement Player of 54.1 to Gary’s 32.4. Gary’s highest of that stat was 7.6 vs Russ’s 12.6 last year. For win shares through age 29 Westbrook leads 87.3 to Gary’s 73.1. However, in his Sonics career Gary has a 126.7 win shares. By age 29 Russ for his career has a 23.9 PER vs Gary’s 18.5. Even for his career as a Sonic Gary has a lower PER than Russ at 20.1.

Accolades

During his Sonics career Gary Payton won Defensive Player of the Year, was a 9x All Star, All NBA 9x, All NBA Defensive team 9x, and steals leader once. So far Russell has 2 scoring titles, 1x Most Valuable Player, 7x All NBA, No shocker Russ by 44 points has already passed Gary in total playoff pts in 67 less games.

Conclusion

So who do you think is the Sonics/Thunders best point guard? Russell Westbrook or Gary Payton? In the regular season and crunch time in the playoffs I’ll take Russell Westbrook.
