Although this type of mentality has been around before the Black Mamba, Kobe Bryant, certainly made it popular with his killer instinct and old school mentality. He has gained fans and haters playing with that get “outta my way” style. In this article we’ll be looking at the pros and cons of the mamba mentality.
A great thing about this is in crunch time you know the star player won’t hesitate to shoot it, even if he’s struggling offensively that game, he still will take the big shot(s). Although it may look selfish, “ball hogging” in the 4th Q can help that player get in rhythm if they are ice cold. It may also boost up their confidence if they make a few consecutive shots in crunch time.
Some bad things about having this mentality is sometimes you forget you have teammates and have tunnel vision. Depending on the situation, having a high ego AND mamba mentality, you’re likely to shoot your team out of the game like Russ has before and several others such as Kobe obviously.
Personally, I respect that kind of mentality but I know it isn’t always a great thing to have depending on the player. Sometimes fans use this an excuse to why their favorite player shot their team out of the game with bad shot selections, I know I have. Some players that are either not really clutch at all shouldn’t have it or depending on the player, if an inefficient scorer shouldn’t have it as well.
